MINUTES OF THE ORDNANCE COMMITTEE MEETING

HELD 20 JUNE 1935

ITEM 12185

GRENADE, HAND, SMOKE (HC) M8 – TRANSFERRED FROM STANDARD TO LIMITED STANDARD AND TO OBSOLETE WHEN STOCK BECOMES EXHAUSTED

Mr. Adelman read the following report of the subcommittee on Grenades.

     REFERENCES- A- Item 10598 O.C.M.

                 B- O.O.471.61/1328- 15th Ind.

                 C- O.O.471.61/1481

1.   Reference A covers the approval as Standard and the transfer to the Chief of Ordnance for procurement, storage and issue, of the Grenade, Hand, Smoke (HC) M8.  The recommendation that the grenade be designated “Essential” was disapproved and combat allowances have not been prescribed, the grenade being used entirely for training.

2.   Reference B directed that there be no further production of the Smoke Grenades M8, but that the stock on hand be issued for training purposes.  This reference further stated that when the present supply of smoke grenades approaches exhaustion, the Chief of Ordnance will notify the Chief of the Chemical Warfare Service, who will make recommendations for consideration in revision of AR775-10 for provision of smoke pots to replace the present smoke grenades.  There remained on hand about one year’s regular allowance of smoke grenades M8, when the Chemical Warfare Service was accordingly informed that steps might be taken as provided in Reference B.

3.   Reference C covers approval of the Smoke Pot, HC, M1, as standard, including the approval of a basis for issue for peace time training.  In paragraph 2c, 2nd indorsement of that reference, it was stated that reclassification of the Hand Grenade, HC, M8 would be made by the Chief of Ordnance.  The Subcommittee accordingly recommends that the necessary action be taken to have the Hand Grenade (HC) M8 transferred from Standard to Limited Standard, and further, that when the existing stock is exhausted the item be automatically transferred to the Obsolete Class.
